According to recent media reports, some 160 million doses of swine flu vaccine are slated to be delivered to the U.S. by fall; enough doses to vaccinate a large portion of the U.S. population. The U.K. government has placed advance orders for 60 million doses.
But that’s probably just the beginning if sanity does not take hold soon.
According to Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccine makers could produce nearly FIVE BILLION pandemic flu shots per year in the best-case scenario.
And according to Business Week, wealthier countries like the U.S. and the U.K. will pay just under $10 per dose, while developing countries would pay less.
If these facts hold true, Big Pharma stands to gain up to $49 billion a year on the swine flu vaccine alone.
The French government will spend nearly a billion euros on a mandatory flu vaccination this autumn, a French website reported on May 30. “France is preparing a battle plan without precedent for this autumn, including an obligatory vaccination campaign for all French of more than 3 months of age,” writes Marie-Christine Tabet for Le Journal du Dimanche. “According to our information, the State will place an order for 100 million units of influenza vaccine from three laboratories (GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi and Novartis).”
On May 15, Bloomberg reported that France, the UK, Belgium and Finland agreed to buy about 158 million shots from London-based Glaxo and Baxter International Inc.
According to the World Health Organization at the United Nations, production of up to 4.9 billion doses of a swine flu vaccine a year would be possible.
“A ‘pilot vaccine’ is being developed under the supervision of the EU. However, some conspiracy theories that are spreading just as fast as the virus have already dismissed the hysteria over the virus as a malevolent plot orchestrated by pharmaceutical companies in order to cash in on people’s fear. One in particular believes that the strain has been purposely engineered so companies producing vaccines can cash in,” Russia Today opined on May 1.
In February Baxter confirmed that it released contaminated flu virus material from a plant in Austria. The contaminated product, a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses and unlabeled H5N1 viruses, was supplied to an Austrian research company. The Austrian firm, Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, then sent portions of it to sub-contractors in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany, the Toronto Sun reported.
Anne Laude, co-director of the Institute of Health at the Université Paris Descartes, said “nobody would have the right, except in the case of a medical counter-indication, to refuse a vaccination.”
Despite the fact that swine flu has claimed just one victim all week, a kill rate multiple times lower than the common flu, governments of the world are acting as if armageddon is right around the corner.
The World Health Organization calls a virus that has killed a confirmed 12 people in over a week a “threat to humanity” while talk of martial law, mandatory vaccinations and forced quarantines runs rampant.
Much of the hysteria is being fueled by people inundating hospitals and doctor’s offices who have mundane illnesses like the common cold, but who just want to “make sure” they don’t have swine flu. Such cases are immediately treated as “suspected swine flu cases” by the media and the panic spreads faster than the actual virus, which according to Mexican health officials is now clearly slowing down.
However, while media headlines and government advisors scream about a potential pandemic and hundreds of thousands of fatalities, an anonymous GP writing for the London Guardian today explains that calls from people worried they have swine flu have tailed off, while people with flu symptoms are almost non-existent.
As the AP video here reports, countries around the world are reacting to the Swine Flu (H1N1 ) outbreak in Mexico with quarantines and travel warnings. The United Nation’s World Health Organization convened an emergency meeting Saturday to develop a response to the “pandemic potential” emerging from Mexico (although the threat is apparently not considered serious enough to prompt officials in the United States to close the border).
If the outbreak indeed turns into a global pandemic, as WHO seems to think, we can expect not only quarantines, but the imposition of martial law in the United States. In fact, the government has planned for just such a scenario for some time now.
In late 2007, the Bush administration issued a “directive” establishing a “National Strategy for Public Health and Medical Preparedness” based on Biodefense for the 21st Century (see PDF). HSPD 21, short for Homeland Security Presidential Directive (signing statement bypassing Congress), defines “catastrophic health event” as “any natural or manmade incident, including terrorism, that results in a number of ill or injured persons sufficient to overwhelm the capabilities of immediate local and regional emergency response and health care systems.”
HSPD 21 established an academic Joint Program for Disaster Medicine and Public Health housed at a National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. It teamed up the Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Defense to “carry out respective civilian and military missions.”
Prior to this, in May of 2007, the U.S. military had the foresight to “plan for a possible avian flu pandemic that could kill as many as three million people in the United States in as little as six weeks,” according to Yahoo News. Guidelines and “planning assumptions for US military services and combatant commands” were published in a document entitled “Implementation Plan for Pandemic Influenza.”
“Possible scenarios include US troops being called in to put down riots, guard pharmaceutical plants and shipments, and help restrict the movement of people inside the country and across its borders,” Yahoo summarizes. “The plan envisions fast moving, catastrophic waves of disease that would overwhelm health facilities and cripple the ability of state and local authorities to provide even basic commodities or services.”
The military would be used to restrict traffic within states to contain the spread of the virus, according to the document. “It said the military will be called on to evacuate non-infected people from areas abroad that are having problems, and to help allies.” In other words, think FEMA during Hurricane Katrina — the relocations, the toxic camps, the confiscation of firearms.
A key military role will be to distribute medical supplies and medications and provide security for the production and shipment of vaccines on orders of the president.
DoD’s “Implementation Plan for Pandemic Influenza” proposes nothing less than the militarization of health care. In short, the military — provided to “augment civilian law enforcement” — will be used to vaccinate the population, as “directed by the president.”
Considering the above, the purpose of the brand spanking new KBR camps ostensibly built for “an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs” comes into focus.
Online searches for the term “listeriosis” spiked several weeks before last summer’s outbreak of the illness was revealed to the public, an article reviewing Internet-based disease surveillance systems shows.
In Ontario, Google searches for the term listeriosis — the illness caused by Listeria bacteria — started to climb as early as mid-April. Inquiries from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and to a lesser degree Quebec started to climb in mid-July.
Searches from all five provinces peaked the week before Maple Leaf Foods announced a recall of Listeria-contaminated luncheon meats and federal authorities warned of an outbreak.
A disease detection system that monitors searches of health topics on Google and other search engines might have sounded an early warning, the article’s authors said. But they noted it remains to be seen whether such a system would be able to tease out true signals of disease against a backdrop of myriad random searches.
“Could it have told people sooner there was something going on? Could it have signified to public health or food safety people that there are a lot of people in different parts of the country that are looking at this and maybe there is something more national and not just regional? It’s hard to know,” said Dr. Kumanan Wilson, a scientist with the Ottawa Health Research Institute and first author of the article.
“But it is provocative that something was happening that correlated with the illness and predated the official announcements of the (Maple Leaf meat) recall and the official announcement that there was a real problem.”
The article was published electronically by the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Thursday, which was, ironically, the sixth anniversary of the day the World Health Organization issued a global alert about a new and severe form of pneumonia being seen in parts of Asia. That was the world’s introduction to SARS.
Wilson and co-author John Brownstein, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, looked at whether search engine data mining would be useful for early disease detection.
They looked to see if last summer’s Listeria outbreak would have been detectable through Google search trends, first looking for the term “listeriosis.”
They were surprised to find searching for “listeriosis” peaked before the problem was public knowledge and continued to decline even after the beginning of what went on to be the largest meat recall in Canadian history.
So they also searched for “Listeria” and found searches for it increased in step with the official announcement of the recalls and outbreak warning.
The authors said they can’t tell from the Google data who was doing the searching before the outbreak was publicly acknowledged.
A Public Health Agency of Canada spokes.man says that while searches may provide insights into emerging outbreaks, many who search for information about a specific disease may not be sick, or may have some other ailment.
